Our exclusive red wine from Domaine Ragot is the Givry Premier Cru from the vineyard La Grande Berge. Hand-picked grapes from low-yielding Pinot Noir vines in a small vineyard above the village produce the ripe fruit which undergoes a temperature-controlled fermentation for 10-12 days. The wine is then matured for over 12 months in French oak barrels (from one to three years old), before bottling. Before being released to Partners the wine will also benefit from at least a further year in bottle.
This is a well-balanced wine with classic, Pinot Noir vegetal notes, a depth of fruit - strawberries, cherries and raspberries - hints of spice, oak and toastiness (from the barrels) and a most pleasing length on the palate. It is a delightful accompaniment for beef, steak or pork dishes and also goes well with hard English cheeses such as Cheddar, Cheshire and Red Leicester.
As 90% of the Givry appellation is red, the white really is something of a rarity, and 3D Partners at Domaine Ragot drink about 5% of the appellation's entire production of white Givry!
It was Jean-Paul's parents who planted a small area of Chardonnay - just to see what happened. These vines, now more than 45 years old, produce the most marvellous white burgundy. It is quite aromatic, with a floral note to the bouquet - reminiscent of acacia, hawthorn and apple - and has a rich, smooth, citrus and honey flavour with just a hint of almonds. It is delicious within two or three years of the vintage, when vibrant with refreshing acidity, but will also mature well, becoming deeper in colour with a rich and powerful bouquet.
