The Wine

GMARY-2004.jpg

Saumur-Champigny

The Mary brothers' Saumur-Champigny 2005 won not only a Gold Medal, but the first-ever Trophy for Loire reds at the 2006 International Wine Challenge.

A deep ruby red or even purple when young, this wine is immediately appealing with its vivid fruit aromas - blackcurrant, raspberry and redcurrant - so typical of the Cabernet Franc grape. It is a 'big' wine, filling the mouth with these sumptuous fruit flavours balanced by gentle acidity and smooth tannin.

Although mouth-watering in its youth, this wine ages gracefully for up to ten years, gradually taking on a delicious spiciness as the tannins soften. It is for this reason that we strongly advise you to keep some, if you can, from each of the vintages to enjoy in future years. If anyone should be in any doubt about the ageing potential of this wine, let them ask those Partners who sampled the 1975 vintage during lunch with the Mary family on one of our visits to Domaine de la Cune!
