Vignobles François Baur 2008 Tasting Notes
Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2004
Pierre is a biodynamic viticulturist. There are now quite a few who lead the way in Alsace. His vines are in optimum condition due to constant working of the soil and eschewing of all chemicals and pesticides. Our exclusive Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2004 comes from the granitic amphitheatre of vines at the back of the village. It is a magnificent offering, showing wonderful lime, citrus and mineral aromatics and great purity and depth of apple, honey and stonefruit on the palate. It has a very, very long finish with richness, balance and, already, some complexity. Superb!
Gewürztraminer Herrenweg 2005
This was a very special vintage in Alsace and it has coaxed the full gambit of flowery, spicy fragrance out of this most ebullient of grape varieties. The nose is wild and exotically scented; Far East meets Parisian boudoir. The palate has richness and depth of fruit and the finish is lingering, with some balanced sweetness. A fine example of this Alsatian speciality. A very good match for smoked fish or a very powerful, runny cheese.
Pinot Gris Herrenweg 2005
Another great Alsatian speciality that has no peer anywhere else in the wine world. It is a world away from industrial Pinot Grigio from northern Italy! Pierre’s Pinot Gris has an array of minerals, honey and spice on the nose and wonderful richness on the palate with flavours of orchard fruits and orange peel freshness. The finish is long and powerful with just the right amount of sweetness to counterbalance the acidity. Try it with rich pork dishes, confit of duck or powerful, flavoursome cheese – in particular the local Munster.
All of Pierre’s wines can be enjoyed young, but will develop considerable complexity over the next 4–5 years or more.
