Montirius 2006 Tasting Notes
Gigondas 2003
Vacqueyras 2003
As in the rest of France, 2003 was an exceptional vintage. Searing heat and near drought conditions resulted in a small crop of intensely ripe grapes - and this earliest harvest on record produced wines of unprecedented concentration and power.
Eric and Christine tend their vines following biodynamic principles - which is the most complete form of organic farming, involving respect for the solar calendar which influences all vineyard activities. This is an incredibly complex way to farm and takes single-minded dedication.
The first of our exclusive wines is the 2003 Gigondas - which is similar in style to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Our special cuvée is made from old, low-yielding vines - 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre. The 2003 vintage is a huge wine with a perfume of the garrigue compounded by rich blackberry and plum flavours. Its ripe tannins are velvety-smooth and the flavours linger tantalisingly on the palate.
Our exclusive 2003 Vacqueyras is made from vines with an average age of 40 years, grown on the plateau of the garrigue. The blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah has again produced a full-bodied wine, crammed with ripe, sweet black fruit. The Syrah provides the powerful fruit character, while the Grenache brings elements of spice and liquorice.
Both wines are a delight now, but if cellared carefully will develop in bottle for at least another five years. They are superb with casseroles, lamb shank and roast meats.
