Domaine des Grands Devers 2005 Tasting Notes
Côtes du Rhône-Villages rouge 2003
Côtes du Rhône-Villages blanc 2004
Our exclusive red Côtes-du-Rhône Villages this year comes from the exceptionally hot 2003 vintage when for most of August the temperatures around here were in the 40s. It is again a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah and the grapes ripened perfectly in the heat and were harvested early in peak condition. As a result it has a deeper than usual colour, and its bouquet of dark cherries is enhanced by the heady, spicy scents of the garrigue. It has less acidity and softer tannins, making it taste richer and fleshier than the 2002.
Although delicious now (it was widely acclaimed by our other winemakers at a recent tasting) it will age well and improve in bottle for at least another 2-3 years. Because of its rich fruit and spicy flavours it is ideal with lamb (indeed Valréas is famous for its lamb), and it will also be delicious with summer BBQs or alfresco salads.
Last year’s exclusive white Côtes-du-Rhône Villages was from the hot 2003 vintage. This year the vintage is the 2004, which was nowhere near as hot. It is however a ‘classic’, very similar to 2001. The wine is a blend of Viognier - for aroma - and Marsanne and Roussanne - for body and freshness. It has more acidity than the 2003, which means that not only will it will keep longer but it will also be a better match for dressed salads. It is extremely good with grilled fish and mild cheese - or just sipped by itself.
