Domaine du Carroir Perrin 2005 Tasting Notes
Sancerre blanc 2003 & Sancerre rouge 2003
Both wines this year are from the 2003 vintage when the canicule, or heatwave, provided an exceptional harvest. The spring and summer started relatively gently but temperatures climbed inexorably into a record August when the whole of France - and the UK - was roasted. Fortunately the Loire Valley escaped the worst of the dryness; the grapes ripened perfectly and were harvested in superb condition some two weeks earlier than usual. Although fuller than normal, the white wine is a very typical Sancerre with its powerful bouquet reminiscent of grass, nettles, gooseberries and blackcurrant leaves. Deliciously fresh and crisp to the taste, full of citrus fruit, with just the right amount of balancing acidity, your glass will need constant topping up. 2003 is an exceptional vintage - according to Pierre the best since 1976!
White Sancerre is excellent both on its own as an apéritif or with food. Due to its deliciously fruity acidity it makes a good partner for lots of tricky foods - asparagus is one - and with pasta or white meat in a tomato-based sauce it is one of the best choices available. Try it also with some French goat’s cheese (the local Crottin de Chavignol is ideal) hot on toast with some tossed salad. Absolutely scrumptious!
To experience the typical freshness of white Sancerre it is best enjoyed relatively young, and this richer-than-usual wine can be drunk immediately, although 2003 is such a fine vintage that it will also keep for up to 5 years if carefully cellared. We were delighted that Pierre won a Bronze Medal for this particular vintage at the prestigious International Wine Challenge held in London in 2004, continuing a consistent run of awards for his wines.
The red Sancerre is made from the Pinot Noir grape, and it should not normally be compared to a red burgundy, also made from the same grape. However such was the power of the 2003 sun that the fresh raspberry and cherry fruit, light tannins and its fruity, easy drinking style give a clear echo of its more famous cousins. This 2003 is ready to drink now, but will also keep well for up to 5 years. Try it slightly chilled to accompany a summer picnic - very refreshing. Older bottles, with their low tannins, will happily accompany grilled pork, lamb chops and hard cheeses.
