Château Monconseil-Gazin 2006 Tasting Notes
Blaye 2003
2003 was an extremely difficult year for most growers throughout France. Spring frosts and hail reduced the size of the harvest, combined with searing heat throughout the summer. Our winemaker Jean-Michel Baudet proved equal to the challenge and has produced a truly stunning wine - so good that it picked up a Bronze Medal at last year’s International Wine Challenge.
Made from a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2003 was matured in oak barrels, half new and half one year old - for optimum balance between structure and fruit. This is a powerful vintage with aromas of blackberries and spicy oak. The colour is dark and deep, and on the palate there are magnificent rich fruit flavours with a hint of spice. The tannins are ripe and velvety-smooth, resulting in a wine that will keep well, but one that is also extremely attractive now with red meat, game and casseroles.
