Vignobles François Baur 2007 Tasting Notes
Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2003
The weather in 2003 was very hot and dry, producing super-ripe grapes full of flavour and potential alcohol. Less dry and less acidic than a usual vintage, this wine has a lovely level of richness that will go really well with sea food, poultry and white meats. Try it chilled as an aperitif too, and dream about the view from the vines high up over the Alsace plain! Drink it now, or if you like the complexity that comes with age, then keep it for up to 10 years.
Gewürztraminer Herrenweg 2004
After the heatwave of 2003 the weather in 2004 returned to normal. The wine is a little drier and more acidic than the 2003, making it eminently suitable for accompanying fine food. As usual the bouquet is instantly recognisable, homing in on ripe, exotic fruits – lychees, mango and pineapple – gently wrapped up with some spicy notes and good acidity. It goes extremely well with lots of highly seasoned dishes, including spicy curries, and it is also an excellent accompaniment to strong cheese or fruit-based desserts. Elegant and aromatic, it is a perfect aperitif and will age well for at least 7 to 8 years.
Pinot Gris Herrenweg 2004
Another wonderful accompaniment to fine foods, this wine has a deliciously sweet but slightly smoky peppery nose, leading to a rich fruity taste of apricots, honey and lemon. Overall it has an agreeable sweetness, but not too much, and just enough to balance the rich flavours and matching acidity. It is delicious chilled as an aperitif, but it also goes particularly well with fish in a rich sauce, meat pâtés, and its partner par excellence, foie gras. This wine will also cellar well for up to 7 or 8 years.
