At the first day of the London International Wine Fair at Excel, the results for the International Wine Challenge 2011 were announced. Yet another successful year for 3D Wines as we scoop 36 medals for the 46 wines entered.

We were delighted that our Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge blend from the 2009 vintage won a Gold Medal.

Our 2009 was blended by Pascal Chastan from La Fagotière and 3D’s Andrew Bennett in November of last year and is a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache.

The Syrah was aged for six months in giant foudres (wooden vats that impart no oak flavour) and the Grenache was aged part in steel tank and part in foudres. It is aromatic, with pepper, liquorice and menthol to the fore (the latter typical of the 2009 vintage). The palate is impressively soft, ripe, yet precise with lovely, juicy tannins and fine minerality. Drink now to 2020.

IWC Judges tasting notes: Deep colour with a purple rim, spicy, meaty, full-bodied, peppery and structured.

Also awarded a Gold this year is the Champagne Fresne Ducret Fresnésie vintage 2002 - which we offered to Partners as an extra Option wine last year.

IWC Judges tasting notes: Deep colour. Honey toasty almonds. Rich in style with brioche and fresh bread. Well balanced, youthful and sensational.

We were also delighted with the Silver Medal which our Heaphy Sauvignon Blanc 2010, from Kahurangi Estate, was awarded at the IWC. In an incredibly competitive section, this was a great result for such a delightfully aromatic and exotic wine.  Pity we’ve sold out – although our 2011 will be bottled in June and will arrive in the UK in the autumn.

IWC Judges tasting notes:  Floral nose. Tropical and stonefruit on the palate. A light and elegant wine.

Our Maranges rouge Le Bois de Clémentine 2009 from Domaine Chevrot also won a Silver. It’s a memorable wine … and we’ve sold all we made!

IWC Judges tasting notes:  Deep cherry crimson. Fragrant mineral nose with cherries and violets. Supple yet youthful tannins, great balance. Complex scented fruit. Serious, long and complex.

Congratulations too to Montirius for gaining a Silver for their Vacqueyras 2009. It will be arriving in the UK shortly.

IWC Judges tasting notes:  Meaty, damson aromas. Silky mouth feel. Chocolate and coffee notes. Well balanced and long.
