About The Vineyards

The Sorin family have been winemakers in Rochefort for generations. Their vineyard is situated on the southern bank of the river Loire, gently sloping towards the flood plain that so influences the microclimate. On cold spring mornings the slightly warmer air over the river helps to prevent the danger of late spring frosts. Equally, the autumn mists which roll up from the river and envelop the vines are responsible for helping to fully ripen the grapes, and in warm autumns aid the development of 'noble rot' which adds extra richness to the resulting wine.
The present vineyard, now managed by André and Monique Sorin's son Gilles, totals 18 hectares and was created by the amalgamation of the holdings of André's grandparents. Indeed, one particular part is still called 'Clos des Belles Mères' (Mother-in-laws' vineyard) and gives its name to a most unusual dry white wine made from 10% Chardonnay as well as the area's notable Chenin Blanc. However, the famous wine of the region is the sweeter white, Coteaux du Layon Rochefort - the Loire's answer to Sauternes. The red wine here is Anjou-Villages, a smooth blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.
Not far from the domaine, on the island of Bèhuard, the Sorin family have a gîte available for rent by Partners.
