Saumur-Champigny 2010
Although 2009 was a hard act to follow, 2010 is considered by many to be the equal, though different in style. Harvest began early October, later than the previous year and the grapes were small, concentrated, yet ripe and healthy, thanks to a fine September. The wines tend to have more acidity than 2009, but lower degrees of alcohol making them very classical and very true to the region and its terroir.
Your Saumur-Champigny 2010 is deep purple in colour with classic Cabernet Franc fragrance of red berry, green pepper and spice. The palate is appealing with fresh red berry fruit and crunchy cranberry, black cherry and dark plum. It has an impressive, lightly herbaceous finish. With its supple, juicy tannins it can be enjoyed now, but will age gracefully over the next seven to ten years.
Saumur-Champigny is an incredibly versatile wine. With its fresh acidity and fruity style it makes an excellent aperitif, served lightly chilled. It can work well with mildly spicy foods such as a mild curry. It also works well with tender meats such as brochette d’agneau or grilled rib of beef.
As it ages, it takes on layers of complexity and provides a superb match with game, charcuterie and hard cheeses.
