Saumur-Champigny Les 3 Jean 2010
Although 2009 was a hard act to follow, 2010 is considered by many to be the equal, though different in style. Harvest began early October, later than the previous year and the grapes were small, concentrated, yet ripe and healthy. The wines have a touch more acidity than the 09s, but lower degrees of alcohol suggest a classic style.
Your exclusive Les 3 Jean is from older vines grown on a mix of sand, fine chalk and gravelly soils surrounding the domaine. The resulting wine is deep purple in colour with unmistakable aromas of cassis, violet and warm earth. The palate resonates with dark plum fruit, chocolate and fresh raspberry intermixed with herbs. It has concentration, length and superb balance.
Saumur Champigny is a versatile food wine. With its bright fresh flavour and characteristic fragrance, it makes a great aperitif wine if served lightly chilled. For an ideal food match, try your Les 3 Jean 2010 with a tender grilled lamb chop, sautéed potatoes and green beans. For a simple midweek match, a tomato based pizza does the trick, or perhaps a spicy sausage and bean casserole? As it ages, it will become complex, smooth and gamey and should provide a wonderful accompaniment to tender beef, game and hard cheeses.Your 2010 can be drunk young and fruity or can be cellared for ten years or more.
