Mercurey rouge Premier Cru Clos des Montaigus

Clos des Montaigus was one of the five original Mercurey Premiers Crus vineyards designated in 1923 and we consider ourselves very fortunate indeed to have found some vines here. The Pinot Noir grapes for our exclusive wine are all hand picked and de-stalked before fermentation and the wine is left over the winter to undergo a second, malolactic fermentation, which helps to soften the tannins. There then follows a further two years of barrel ageing before the wine is bottled.

The young wine has an aroma of black fruit with vanilla notes from the new oak barrels, and to taste it has strong blackberry and cherry flavours with smooth tannins and a dash of mouth-watering acidity. It is a full-bodied wine with enormous depth of flavour, yet it is also so well balanced that it has that true hallmark of great red burgundy - elegance. With food, this wine is delicious when young, but as it ages it will begin to develop typical undergrowth scents alongside its forest fruit flavours. If carefully cellared it will keep well for at least five years.
