Beaune Premier Cru Les Avaux

PJACO-03.jpgThe appellation of Beaune is unique within Burgundy in that a high proportion of its wines are designated Premier Cru - one reason why the name of this beautiful town is known all over the world. The vineyard soils - limestone irregularly mixed with clay and sand - produce markedly different wines depending on the exact site (climat). The Premier Cru vineyard Les Avaux is situated to the west of Beaune towards the appellation of Pommard and is considered to be one of the very best premier cru sites - indeed, the famous Hospice de Beaune owns about 15% of this particular vineyard.

The grape is used to make our exclusive Les Avaux is the Pinot Noir and the style of the wine is perfumed, supple, fruity and elegant. It matures fairly rapidly for a burgundy, and can be ready for drinking after four or five years in bottle, depending upon the vintage. However, like most good burgundy it will also age well for upwards of 10 years. We do urge you to keep a few bottles from each vintage to sample in years to come!

WINE magazine said of our 1995 vintage: "Beaune is one of the most reliable commune wines in the whole of Burgundy - and with wines like this being produced there, it's easy to see why. Despite its relative youth, supple tannins are well-integrated on the ripe, red fruit and vegetal palate of this appealing wine."
