Maranges Rouge Sur le Chêne

XCHEV-03.jpgMaranges Sur le Chêne comes from what is generally regarded as the best terroir in the village of Cheilly-les-Maranges. The subsoil is limestone dating from the Jurassic period and the topsoil is a naturally-irrigated blend of clay and chalk: a perfect combination to ensure the balance of minerals which make up the fine structure of this wine. The name Sur le Chêne comes from the adjacent stand of oak trees and is a lieu-dit (named place), which recognizes the consistent quality of wine produced from this parcel of vines.

The southernmost appellation of the Côte d'Or, Maranges produces highly-coloured, well structured wines with a depth of fruit sufficient to withstand a judicious amount of ageing in oak barrels. However, only about 20% of the barrels are new, which is the maximum Fernand thinks is right for his wines - the balancing complexity added by the tannins from the wood must complement the characteristic fruity Pinot Noir character rather than dominate it. The wine spends about 15 months in oak before bottling, and although ready to drink straight away, it always benefits from a further year or two in bottle.
